Nissan GT-R recovered by Cobra in 19 minutes flat
A Nissan GT-R owner on the leafy boundaries of Merseyside was surprised to be contacted by Cobra early afternoon on 2nd April. An alert had been generated at 14.49 after the vehicle engine was started without the Driver Card present.
The customer decided to rush to his home nearby (an action not recommended by Cobra) to check on his vehicle himself, and found thieves brazenly sitting in his vehicle on the driveway. On seeing him approach they reversed out at high speed and sped off in the car.
The customer confirmed the theft to Police and to Cobra at 14.52, a mere 3 minutes after the alert was first generated. He then discovered that his house had been broken into and the car keys had been taken. This is the most common method of vehicle theft today, as it is the only means of bypassing high levels of standard security features fitted to high value vehicles. The thieves had also stolen a number of electrical items from the property.
Cobra immediately established an open line to Merseyside Police with live updates at one minute intervals. By 14:57 Cobra confirmed that the vehicle was travelling at speeds in excess of 100 mph.
At 15:01 Cobra were able to inform Police that the vehicle ignition had been switched off and that the vehicle was now stationary.
By 15:08 Police were on the scene and secured the vehicle which was undamaged and in pristine condition. Sadly, there was no sign of the thieves, or of the other items stolen.
The customer had only taken delivery of the car two months earlier and thought long and hard before deciding to fit Nissan Tracking System, the only Nissan approved tracking system. He was astonished at the pinpoint accuracy of the tracking and the speed of recovery, and was delighted with the service received from Cobra. He commented that without the alert generated by the Driver Card not being present when the engine was started, the vehicle would have been in the wrong hands for much longer that the 19 minutes between the alert being initially generated and the car being secured by Police.
In fact high value vehicles stolen to order using the keys, which are generally obtained via a house break-in, are frequently transported out of the UK within 72 hours according to AVCIS, the Vehicle Crime Division of The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO).
An excellent result for the customer and his insurer, the Police, and also for Cobra, for whom this represents routine service delivery.
