UK Department of Transport statistics* show that sudden
braking and excessive speed were contributory factors in more than
3,000 serious and fatal accidents attended by the police in
2007.
Official figures also show that in 2007 about half of
drivers on urban roads broke the speed limit, including cars,
taxis, vans and heavygoods vehicles.
